The 319 Grant is coming to a close.  The collaboration with the City of Augusta has worked and worked well.  We have enjoyed working with Mr. Jerry Dostie who is the City’s representative to our Technical Committee and with both Gerard Roy and Dan Nichols who have handled administrative functions for the City.  The result has been a smoothly operating project that has major road projects on The Albee, Hayes Landing, Tasker, Woodard, Young Roads; at the WLA Landing and at four homeowner sites.  We have nearly fully utilized the project’s funds in both the grant’s project’s and technical assistance lines.  We have come to the point where we have more applicancations than we have funds available and thus, no more application are being requested.  This project has involved the time and energy of a number of WLA members and Friends.  We need to thank Mr. John Pucciarelli, Chair of the Technical Committee (T.C.), Mr. Dennis Curtis of the T.C., Dr. Melissa Laser of the T.C., Cindy Eurich of the WLA Landing Committee, all WLA members who spent lots of time on this project.  We also need to recognize Mr. Josh Platt of the Kennebec County Soil and Water Conservation District (KCSWCD) who worked long and hard to make these projects into the successes that they are.  A special thanks to the KCSWCD for agreeing to provide whatever services necessary, beyond those funded in the grant, as in-kind contributions to assure the success of the project as a whole.

319 Grant Steering Committee Meeting. April 1st at Kennebec County Soil and Water District conference room. Meeting starts at 1:00 Pm

Dec 7 2008

The City of Augusta, the Kennebec County Soil & Water Conservation District (KCSWCD) and the Worromontogus Lake Association (WLA) are working together to administer a grant from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) aimed at improving the water quality in Worromontogus Lake (Togus Pond) and Togus Stream.

The intent of this grant is to reduce Nonpoint Source (NPS) pollution that enters the waterway. Basically, NPS is rainwater that carries contaminants from driveways, roofs, roads, fields and other surfaces. NPS pollution is caused by excess sediment or nutrients, high bacteria, toxic substances, increased water temperature, altered water flow, etc. There is grant money available to road associations, municipalities and individuals to fund projects that will benefit the lake and stream. The City, the KCSWCD and the WLA are working together to provide technical assistance and to review, prioritize and award grant funds based on the potential benefit to the watershed. You will find a document on this page titled “Cost Share Guidelines” that will provide you with further details.

The forms needed to apply for funds under this grant are also available on this page.

I think you will agree that this is a tremendous opportunity to work together and help assure the on-going health of the watershed. It is a chance to preserve this area not only for our enjoyment but to pass on to our children. If you have any questions about this grant program, please feel free to call me at 623-2790 or write me at the address above or president@togusponds.org
